Extruded Heatsinks

Heatsinks / Extruded Heatsinks
extrusion heatsinks

A wide range of common extrusion heatsinks are available from Cooling Source. We can ship a 6-foot bar or trim to a certain length. To produce a final aluminum extrusion heatsink that is either cross-cut or straight, an aluminum block is forced (extruded) through a die. Consequently, we are able to offer a variety of convection cooling options that are appropriate for high-power components. To achieve your thermal objectives, we may also produce intricate, premium aluminum extrusion fins.

6063 Aluminum Extruded Heatsinks: Benefits & Applications

Why 6063 Aluminum?

Alloy 6063 is one of the most widely used aluminum grades for thermal management solutions. It combines excellent thermal characteristics with superior manufacturability, making it ideal for extruded heatsinks used across electronics, power systems, and industrial applications.

Benefits of 6063 Aluminum Extruded Heatsinks

1. Excellent Thermal Conductivity

6063 aluminum provides very good thermal conductivity—typically around 200–215 W/m·K—allowing efficient heat transfer from electronic components to the ambient environment.

2. Highly Extrudable – Complex Shapes Are Easy

6063 is known for its superb extrudability, enabling:

  • Tall, thin fins
  • Tight fin spacing
  • Complex geometries
  • Integrated mounting features

This allows designers to achieve better performance without secondary assembly steps.

3. Strong and Lightweight

The alloy offers a balanced combination of:

  • Good mechanical strength
  • Low weight
  • High corrosion resistance

Ideal for compact or mobile electronics where weight matters.

4. Smooth Surface Finish

6063 naturally produces:

  • Very smooth extruded surfaces
  • Clean edges
  • High-quality anodizing

This improves aesthetics, corrosion resistance, and sometimes thermal emissivity.

5. Cost-Effective for Medium to High Volumes

Extrusion is an efficient, scalable process. Once the die is made, heatsinks can be produced in large quantities at very competitive cost.

6. Good Machinability

After extrusion, 6063 heatsinks can be easily:

  • CNC machined
  • Drilled and tapped
  • Cut to various lengths

This makes customization simple and economical.

7. Compatible with Surface Treatments

Common finishing options:

  • Black anodizing
  • Hard anodizing
  • Powder coating
  • Chromate conversion

These finishes improve durability and thermal radiation.
